Jeremy Oliver, The Australian Wine Annual 2015

Sauvignon Blanc Semillon

The vibrant and aromatic blend produces a fresh, distinctive wine that accentuates the unique character of both varieties. Meticulous winemaking preserves the remarkable intensity of fruit flavour and provides the structure, weight and texture that characterise the Cape Mentelle style.

Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2008

Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2008

Cape Mentelle takes a minimal approach towards this classic Margaret River blend. The aim is to preserve as much fruit intensity and regional character as possible, whilst providing a full flavoured distinctive white wine. The style accentuates the fresh fruit characters of both varieties with the added complexity and palate weight offered by a small portion of barrel fermentation.

Pale straw with hints of green.
Aromas of zesty lime and pawpaw fruits, fresh snowpeas and fragrant citrus blossom are overlayed with hints of blackcurrant.
The foreground features lively lemon and lime zest, with crunchy sugar snap pea and wheat grass. Generous texture and fruit weight is well balanced by long and even citrus acidity.
58% Sauvignon Blanc, 42% Semillon.
Drink young and fresh.
Food Pairing Notes
Salt and pepper tofu with shiitake broth.
The Vineyard
he lion’s share of the fruit came from the cooler southern half of the region, including our Chapman Brook Vineyard, along with our other Estate owned and selected contract vineyards. Various canopy management methods are used, with the objective being to maximise fruit flavour development. Typically the vineyard soils are geologically ancient, free draining sandy loams with a high percentage of lateritic gravel.
The Season
A wet winter and warm spring encouraged uniform growth in all varieties. An ideal flowering period marked the beginning of a long dry spell lasting until mid-February when the whites were all harvested in perfect conditions over the following four weeks.
When harvesting sauvignon blanc and semillon the emphasis is placed on capturing vibrant fresh flavours with clean acidity. Fruit is generally machine harvested at night to take advantage of the cooler temperatures. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks with 5% of the blend fermented in new French and American oak barriques. The wine is assembled after three months. Bottling took place in July 2008.
Alcohol 12.5%, 6.5 g/l total acidity, pH 3.2.

The Australian Wine Annual 2010

Jeremy Oliver

A fresh, lively expression of this regional style with texture and balance. Its fragrant aromas of gooseberries, passionfruit and tropical fruits overlie nuances of cut grass. Underpinned by a fine chalkiness, its pure, juicy palate has length, richness and a streamlined shape culminating in a fresh, focused and faintly mineral finish.

Ray Jordan

Beautifully precise and pristine, minerally wine, revealing an almost slaty character. The palate is austere and lingering with a refreshing tightness concealing plenty of powerful intensity.

Tyson Stelzer

It’s no surprise that one of the most impressive wines of the day hails from the great estate of Cape Mentelle. This wine delivers what so many others lack - both zesty, lively citrus fruit and at the same time juicy ripeness. It’s got everything you would want in Margaret River SBS - texture, balance, finesse and style. Bring it on!

The Australian Wine Companion

James Halliday

Has excellent juicy vinosity on the mid-palate, flavours of lemon, gooseberry and grass all intermingling, the touch of barrel ferment barely visible; excellent balance and length for the short-term cellaring.

Gary Walsh

It has the usual attractive greenery of snowpeas and a touch of capsicum spice with lime, passionfruit and hints of pineapple fruit. In the mouth brisk and dry with the barest touch of creaminess. Refreshingly tart, beautifully balanced and presented with a long dry flinty finish ticking the last box
