about Cape Mentelle's wine”

Jeremy Oliver, The Australian Wine Annual 2015

A powerful and elegant shiraz exuding aromas of blueberry and violets with a long, silky palate carrying flavours of ripe plum and spice. Traditional winemaking techniques including gentle basket pressing and maturation in French oak enhance the inherent intensity and character of this wine.

Shiraz 2008

Shiraz 2008

Cape Mentelle Shiraz draws inspiration from the techniques and wines of the Northern Rhône Valley in France. The fruit is destemmed, berry sorted, cold soaked and traditionally fermented. Maturation in both large oak vats and small barriques is aimed at retaining the refined fruit, floral and spice characters of the variety.

Dark red with crimson hues.
Blueberry, dark cherry and ripe plum meet with anise and cinnamon. Fragrant violet and lightly roasted coffee bean formulate a complex and expressive nose.
A vibrant core of blueberry, mulberry and hints of raspberry is well balanced with cocoa and savoury oak. The palate is fine, elegant and focussed, finishing with gravelly, structural tannins.
100% shiraz.
Drink now to 2028.
Food Pairing Notes
Medium-rare venison loin, with braised shank and truffle pie.
The Vineyard
The fruit for this wine was sourced from the Estate Vineyard, along with a 38 year old vineyard in the Wilyabrup sub-region of Margaret River. The soils are predominantly deep sandy loams with high lateritic gravel content over clay. Shoot and leaf removal techniques were used to ensure a balance between fruit exposure to light whilst providing protection from the midday sun.
The Season
A wet winter and warm spring encouraged uniform growth in all varieties. An ideal flowering period marked the beginning of a long dry spell lasting until mid-February. The harvest for red varietals was ideal with finished wines defined by excellent tannin structureandlength. Thevintageissure to be amongst the greatest vintages for red wines in Margaret River.
Fruit was selectively harvested based on flavour and tannin maturity. Fermentation took place in a combination of open and static stainless steel fermenters and was managed with regular plunging and pumping over. All batches were basket pressed and transferred to large oak vats for malolactic fermentation. The wine was matured for 14 months in predominantly Burgundian coopered French oak barriques, 30% of which were new, before being bottled in February 2010.
13.5% alcohol, 6.3g/l total acidity, 3.45 pH.

Stylish, meaty and savoury, this measured, polished shiraz has a deep, rather closed bouquet of dark plums and berries, tight-knit gamy cedar/vanilla oak and dried herbs backed by white pepper, cloves and nutmeg. Elegant but profoundly flavoured, it’s long, supple and fine-grained, delivering a seamless marriage of deep plum, blackberry and blueberry flavour, fine-grained oak and a firm, but pliant undercarriage of fine tannin.

An often underrated wine is the Cape Mentelle shiraz. Yet when you taste something like this you really have to wonder why. Gorgeous scented nose with lifted floral spices. The palate is seamlessly woven with fine ripe tannins, fine grained oak and beautifully sweet medium weight fruit intensity. Super length and palate persistence. One of the best in this distinguished line.

... This release is smooth and soft, fruit-driven and easy to enjoy. It’s all mulberry and dark cherry and meaty, musky, smoky oak. It’s fine and elegant and yet fully, sweetly ripe ... this is a very attractive release.
