Cape Mentelle Shiraz draws inspiration from the techniques and wines of the Northern Rhône Valley in France. The fruit is destemmed, berry sorted, cold soaked and traditionally fermented. Maturation in both large oak vats and small barriques is aimed at retaining the refined fruit, floral and spice characters of the variety.

The Vineyard
The fruit for this wine was sourced from Cape Mentelle’s Estate, Foxcliffe and Kyella vineyards in Margaret River. The soils are predominantly deep sandy loams with high lateritic gravel content over clay. Shoot and leaf removal techniques were used to ensure a balance between fruit exposure to light whilst providing protection from the midday sun.
The Season
The 2010 harvest in Margaret River continues a run of excellent vintages, again marked by a very dry and mild summer. The only signifi cant rainfall for the vintage period was not until mid-April ensuring an excellent ripening period with fruit retaining pristine varietal fl avours, great concentration and intensity.
Fruit was selectively harvested and berry sorted based on fl avour and tannin maturity. Fermentation took place in a combination of open and static stainless steel fermenters. The ferments were managed with a combination of plunging and pump overs. All batches were basket pressed and transferred to large oak vats for malolactic fermentation. The wine was matured for 15 months in predominantly Burgundian coopered French oak barriques, 25% of which were new, before being bottled in September 2011.
13.5% alcohol, 5.8g/l total acidity, 3.5 pH.

West Australian

Ray Jordan

One of the most elegant and stylish shiraz from Margaret River. Savoury, brambly notes on the nose with a splash of spices and black pepper. The palate is supported by fine tannins and fine-grained oak. It results in a smooth and silky finish with wonderful texture and mouth feel. Exceptional wine.

Wine Taste

Tyson Stelzer

There’s a deep core of blueberries, blackberries, pepper and violets on display here, but, as ever, the theme is more about structure and longevity than immediate fruit appeal. Textural, firm, fine, gravelly tannins provide great mouthfeel around a core of sweet fruit presence. With impressive fruit profile, supportive milk choc oak and excellent length, this is another vintage for the cellar.

Australian Wine Companion 2013

James Halliday

Deep but clear purple-crimson; the bouquet calmly announces its cool-grown origins, with fragrant, almost flowery, redfruits and spices; the medium-bodied palate is supple and smooth, building impressively on the finely structured finish thanks to exactly poised

The Australian Wine Annual 2013

Jeremy Oliver

Supported by a firm spine of dusty, al dente tannins, this balanced and elegant shiraz reflects the spiciness and savoury qualities it can develop in Margaret River. Leathery, charcuterie-like aromas of blackberries, dark plums, raspberries and cassis are backed by suggestions of briar and a whiff of dark pepper. The palate smoothes out with aeration, delivering intense flavours of black and blue fruits knit tightly with fine-grained smoky, cedary oak, finishing long a meaty. It doesn't quite have the focus of fruit for an even higher rating.
