There's an artful elegance,
layered depth and precise focus
about Cape Mentelle's wine”
Jeremy Oliver, The Australian Wine Annual 2015
A powerful and elegant shiraz exuding aromas of blueberry and violets with a long, silky palate carrying flavours of ripe plum and spice. Traditional winemaking techniques including gentle basket pressing and maturation in French oak enhance the inherent intensity and character of this wine.
Cape Mentelle Shiraz draws inspiration from the techniques and wines of the Northern Rhône Valley in France. The fruit is destemmed, berry sorted, cold soaked and traditionally fermented. Maturation in both large oak vats and small barriques is aimed at retaining the refined fruit, floral and spice characters of the variety.
“Cape Mentelle Shiraz has become a wine that I look forward to trying each year. This release has might and power but it comes at the expense of finesse. It pushes the ripeness envelop but remains wholeheartedly savoury, its clove and general dry spice notes chattering away as tar and deep black cherry flavours power through. A rumble of gravelly tannin helps give the wine a rugged, muscular feel. It’s a very good release; it impressed without quite inspiring superlatives.”
A core of black-cherried fruit champs through an array of clove and assorted dry spice notes. This is a savoury rocket. Peppery, leafy, fruity and firm. Its ripeness is at the upper level of comfort, but power and impact comes as a result.
Another gorgeous example of Cape Mentelle shiraz. This one is one of the lightest I can recall yet it lacks nothing in fruit flavour, intensity and style. Beautifully seductive plum and spice on the nose with a dash of black pepper. Gravelly textured palate with silky smooth oak integration.
Fragrant lifted red berry and violet aromas, with an attractive kiss of oak. A stylish wine. Elegance and balance, as well as charm and drinkability. Good firm, drying tannin structure. A smart shiraz of elegance, depth and drinkability.Download all reviews for this vintage as PDF Download all reviews for this vintage as PDF
