There's an artful elegance,
layered depth and precise focus
about Cape Mentelle's wine”
Jeremy Oliver, The Australian Wine Annual 2015
A unique wine from the 36 years old, low yielding bush vines of our original Estate Vineyard. This zinfandel exudes flavours of plum pudding, black cherry and sweet spices on a rich, mouth filling palate. Hand picked, basket pressed and matured in the finest oak it is. Australia’s leading example of this bold and generous variety.
Introduced to the Estate Vineyard from California in 1974, Zinfandel is a particularily demanding variety to manage both in the vineyard and the winery. The resulting unique and hedonistically rich wine makes all the hard work worthwhile and as such the Cape Mentelle Zinfandel has developed something of a "Cult" following for lover of such a style.
Plush, smooth and unctuous, unfolding a profoundly floral, musky and heady bouquet of rose petals, blackberries, blueberry confiture with a wildness and genuine depth of perfume. Smooth and silky, it reveals a lustrous, layered and faintly brambly presence of cherries, plums and dark berries tightly knit with an ultra-fine grade of polished tannin and finishing with exceptional freshness. Simply beautiful clarity, structure and depth of flavour.
The oldest practitioner of zinfandel in Australia, going back to David Hohnen’s first years as a vigneron, the vines the oldest in Australia. The colour is of medium depth, the aromas and flavours are of spire, tobacco leaf, cherry and raspberry, the tannins fine, the oak incidental.
This is that rare creature, a balanced zinfandel with properly ripe fruit. Loaded with blackberry and mixed spice aromas, it’s big, bold and straightforward with rich, powerful flavour and swathes of gripping tannins. Powerful and very, very good.
A spicy, dusty zin that’s as long and smooth as a seasoned pop crooner. Blackcurrant hits the palate before dark cherry washes the finish.Download all reviews for this vintage as PDF
