A unique wine from the 36 years old, low yielding bush vines of our original Estate Vineyard. This zinfandel exudes flavours of plum pudding, black cherry and sweet spices on a rich, mouth filling palate. Hand picked, basket pressed and matured in the finest oak it is. Australia’s leading example of this bold and generous variety.
Presumed to have originated in the Balkans, Zinfandel was introduced to the estate vineyard from California in 1974. Zinfandel is a particularly demanding variety to manage in the vineyard where it is unruly and prone to catching diseases. But the rewards are reaped in the cellar where we honor this northern American heritage with traditional long maceration techniques and spicy oak to produce this uniquely rich and generous wine that has been a favourite of Cape Mentelle followers for years.

A bold statement of Zinfandel with a typically high alcohol percentage but a rather seductive and smooth-talking palate. Loads of black fruits with classic cherry and fruitcake richness, dark chocolate and a decent sprinkle of spices. Despite the ripeness and the alcohol this is one of the more elegant example of this distinctive variety.
