About Our Wines

Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Wine Companion - James Halliday

This should be the least ready of the trio of Cape Mentelle '15 siblings, but is the most ready. It is absolutely delicious now, with all of its flavour, texture and structure ducks in a row. It's the stealthy softness of the tannins, which are there, and will continue to do what is required of them for decades to come.

Single Vineyard Shiraz 2015

Wine Companion - James Halliday

Hand-picked from Block 5 of the Trinders Vineyard, destemmed, lightly crushed, 50 days on skins after fermentation, matured for 20 months in 80% French and 20% American oak. Exceptional attention to detail manifested by the very expensive X-ray optical scanning of every berry passing by on a moving belt, and the simultaneous removal of imperfect berries by a tiny jet of air. The wine has remarkable elegance, purity and energy.

Chardonnay 2016

Wine Companion - James Halliday

Whole-bunch pressed to French barrels for wild fermentation and a lengthy sojourn. Full-on green-gold; it's exceptionally intense and concentrated, with all manner of stone fruits and a savoury gauze of grapefruit juice and zest. The acidity is important now, and will be so later. Striking.

Zinfandel 2015

jamessuckling.com - James Suckling

This Zinfandel is the real deal. Aromas of dark fruit, figs and chocolate. Full body, juicy tannins and a savory finish. Hints of cream. 50% new wood. From 40-year-old head pruned vines. Small production. Screw cap. Drink now

Wallcliffe Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2015

Wine Companion - James Halliday

The best parcels of sauvignon blanc and semillon are the soul of Wallcliffe, a blend that deserves more recognition. This is one of the finest for its complexity and deliciousness from the Margaret River. Super restraint taking its high notes off the citrus scale with lemon-lime zest and pith plus lemongrass, then wraps that all up in a savoury parcel leading onto such a fine palate, with length to match.

Wallcliffe Merlot, Petit Verdot 2015

The Wine Front - Gary Walsh

Well well well. This is a very nice wine.

Plum, red berries, ginger biscuits, dark chocolate, peppermint, flowers, nori etc. Medium bodied, silky and fluid, spice and earthiness, a bit of ‘minerality’ to the acidity and tannin, with a firm push of tannin on the finish, and forest berries, spice and perfume trailing away. Just lovely. Bespoke tailoring. An absolute charmer.

Wallcliffe Cabernet, Cabernet Franc 2014

huonhooke.com - Huon Hooke

Deep red colour with good purple tinges. The nose is all blackberry, blackcurrant and cassis - very cabernet, ripe and clean and attractive, with a sheen of classy oak. In the mouth, it's full-bodied and ripe; rich black fruits rather than red; powerful and fleshy, with high extract. An absolute ripper of a cabernet. It will cellar beautifully.

Semillon 2016

Wine Companion - James Halliday

From the far south of Margaret River, fermented and matured in French oak giving it a luminous green-straw colour. It is every bit as complex as its vinification could give, filling the mouth with strands of flavours ranging from lemon to honey. But it's the power of the crunchy acidity on the finish that gives this wine its passport with unlimited rights of re-entry.

Shiraz 2015

jamessuckling.com - James Suckling

Aromas of blackberry, granite, truffles and mushroom follow through to full body wine with loads of energy. The minerality is so exciting in this. Unique. Screw cap. Drink here.

Cabernet Merlot Trinders 2015

The Real Review - Huon Hooke

Deepish red colour with a faint tinge of purple. The bouquet initially presents smoked charcuterie aromas, suggesting lots of toasty oak has been employed. It's full-bodied, ripe and elegantly crafted, with fine balance, superb cabernet structure and terrific length. A delicious wine. I cannot remember a better Trinders.

Star Cellar Door

Gourmet Traveller

May 2015

This is a quintessential Margaret River cellar door with rugged jarrah and marri gums standing tall over the statuesque mudbrick cellar door. It's a tranquil bushland setting, ideal for putting the focus on tasting the Cape Mentelle wines. Now under the direction of Frédérique Perrin, it is home to several of Margaret River's finest wines: the sublime Cabernet; the Wallcliffe Sauvignon Blanc Semillon with its stunning razor-sharp complexity; the restrained, age-worthy Chardonnay: the succulent Wilyabrup Cabernet. One of the greatest things about the Cape Mentelle cellar door is that it is all about the wines. Taste and enjoy. There is more, however, if you'd like to take a Behind the Scenes tour (60 minutes for $25pp) or a Degustation Tour and Tasting (120 minutes for $80pp). For those who love pétanque, four pistes are available while the cellar door is open. In the summer, outdoor movies play in the evening in this bucolic setting.

Australian Wine Companion 2014

James Halliday

Cape Mentelle is firing on all cylinders, with the winemaking team fully capitalising on the extensive and largely mature vineyards, which obviate the need for contract-grown fruit. It is hard to say which of the wines is best: the ranking, such as it is, varies from year to year. That said, Sauvignon Blanc Semillon, Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon lead the portofolio.

Producer of the Year

Ray Jordan

"The quality, depth and breadth of the Cape Mentelle range is astounding. The sensational Cape Mentelle Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 was just pipped in a taste-off for the wine of the year."

The West Australian Wine Guide 2012

Winemaker of the Year

Ray Jordan

Come with a decent pedigree that goes back to his grandfather Jack Mann and his uncle Dorham. But Robert Mann has created this own reputation based on a understanding of provenance, winemaking and region to capture the very essence of  style.
