An individual expression of the stunning fruit hand picked from the mature, low yielding vines of our original Wallcliffe Vineyard. This wine captures the unique synergy of site, vintage and varieties to create a layered and complex wine with defined varietal characters and exceptional vibrancy.
The Wallcliffe Sauvignon Blanc Semillon is a tiny production from our original Wallcliffe Vineyard established in 1970 in Margaret River. The wine represents the vagaries of climate, individuality of site, the complementary characters of the two varieties and a restrained yet evocative winemaking approach. This wine will evolve to produce different characters and complexity over time and will benefit from medium term cellaring.
The colour is light straw and the bouquet immediately reveals barrel fermentation, without dominant oak. Dry, savoury, toasted nut bouquet with straw and dried herb notes, and some toasted almond from the barrels. It’s intense and dry, lively and vigorous in the mouth, with good flavour length and balancing acidity, and a clean, lingering finish. Superb now and it will reward further cellaring.
A benchmark wine, true to style, with a fresh and slightly briny bouquet of gooseberries, lemon rind and vanilla/clove/cinnamon oak backed by nuances of dried herbs, minerals and a hint of butter. It's long and tighlty sculpted, with a generous presence of gooseberries, melon and lemony fruit underpinned by a fine chalkiness and tighlty knit with creamy oak and nutty yeast-derived influences, finishing long, savoury and deftly focused around a brisk citrusy acidity.
55/45% estate-grown sauvignon blanc and semillon barrel-fermented in French oak (35% new). Three vineyard sections are picked and separately fermented, with a selection of the best barrels at the end of the process. The precocious display of fruit throughout has easily absorbed the oak, leaving lemongrass, citrus and a wisp of lime marmalade offset by cleaning natural acidity.
