Wallcliffe Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2012

Wallcliffe Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2012

The Wallcliffe Sauvignon Blanc Semillon is a tiny production from our original Wallcliffe Vineyard established in 1970 in Margaret River. The wine represents the vagaries of climate, individuality of site, the complementary characters of the two varieties and a restrained yet evocative winemaking approach. This wine will evolve to produce different characters and complexity over time and will benefit from medium term cellaring.

Pale Straw
Restrained yet complex with a combination of ginger, lemongrass, lime, honeysuckle and subtle flinty characters.
Tight and juicy with black currant and limes complimented by a complex textural pithy palate. The natural acidity is tight and precise providing an excellent backbone to the long, intense finish carrying flavours of lemon rind and subtle spices.
55% Sauvignon Blanc, 45% Semillon
15 years
Food Pairing Notes
Goats curd galette served with watercress salad.
The Vineyard
The Estate Vineyard was established on a ridge of free draining lateritic gravel between 1970 and 1972. Sauvignon blanc and semillon were grafted onto shiraz vines in the early 1980’s and today produce the distinctive fruit for the Wallcliffe Sauvignon Blanc Semillon.
The Season
The 2012 vintage was noted by above average summer temperatures and average rainfall. What resulted was a steady ripening period leading up to a hot January and an early start to the harvest. Mild temperatures throughout February and March ensured fruit harvested in perfect condition and completed by early April prior to heavy late April rains.
The Wallcliffe Sauvignon Blanc Semillon is a wine that makes itself in the vineyard. We simply ferment the three different sections of the vineyard in French oak barriques (35% new) to help build and define individual characters. A selection of the best barrels are then blended to make the wine which most accurately reflects the characters of the season and the vineyard.
12.5% alcohol, 7.0 g/l total acidity, 3.25pH.

Huon Hooke

Huon hooke

The colour is light straw and the bouquet immediately reveals barrel fermentation, without dominant oak. Dry, savoury, toasted nut bouquet with straw and dried herb notes, and some toasted almond from the barrels. It’s intense and dry, lively and vigorous in the mouth, with good flavour length and balancing acidity, and a clean, lingering finish. Superb now and it will reward further cellaring.

The Australian Wine Annual 2015

Jeremy Oliver

A benchmark wine, true to style, with a fresh and slightly briny bouquet of gooseberries, lemon rind and vanilla/clove/cinnamon oak backed by nuances of dried herbs, minerals and a hint of butter. It's long and tighlty sculpted, with a generous presence of gooseberries, melon and lemony fruit underpinned by a fine chalkiness and tighlty knit with creamy oak and nutty yeast-derived influences, finishing long, savoury  and deftly focused around a brisk citrusy acidity.

James Halliday Australian Wine Companion

James Halliday

55/45% estate-grown sauvignon blanc and semillon barrel-fermented in French oak (35% new). Three vineyard sections are picked and separately fermented, with a selection of the best barrels at the end of the process. The precocious display of fruit throughout has easily absorbed the oak, leaving lemongrass, citrus and a wisp of lime marmalade offset by cleaning natural acidity. Bred to stay.
