Zinfandel 2007

Introduced to the Cape Mentelle vineyard from California in 1974, zinfandel is a particularly demanding variety to manage both in the vineyard and the winery. The resulting unique and hedonistically rich wine makes all the hard work worthwhile and as such the Cape Mentelle Zinfandel has developed something of a ‘cult’ following for lovers of bold red wines.

The Vineyard
Predominantly sourced from the Cape Mentelle Estate vines there is a combination of ironstone gravel soils, old bush vines and vertically shoot positioned canopies. The vines are shoot thinned and in some cases leaf plucked to ensure the perfect balance between ensuring fruit exposure to light along with protection from the midday sun.
The Season
2007 was one of the earliest recorded vintages in Margaret River. The season was marked by a warm, dry growing season that combined with excellent vine health to produce full flavoured, concentrated red wines with great aromatic intensity and deep, fresh palates.
he zinfandel was handpicked in the first week of March. After destemming, the must was allowed to soak for several days prior to fermentation to soften up the raisined berries before being inoculated with a vigorous yeast strain. The wine steadily fermented to dryness before being basket pressed directy to large oak vats and barriques for malolactic fermentation and maturation. The wine was then aged in 25% new oak barrels, primarily French, for a total of 18 months.

...Cape Mentelle’s Zinfandel has got to be about the best example of this grape in the country. Deep garnet colored, the 2007 Zinfandel has incredibly expressive blueberry and spiced raisin aromas with an undercurrent of plum pudding, cinnamon and allspice. Rich, full bodied with medium to high acid and a medium level of velvety tannins, this is one opulent wine giving a beautifully long finish.
