Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2016

The Wine Front, Campbell Mattinson

"Cool/wet year in Margaret River but it hasn’t hurt this aromatic white blend one iota.
Mark this down as a ‘buy’. It’s buoyant with fruit flavour, slings admirably through the finish, has body, has texture, and while entirely fruit-driven it avoids coming across as simple via its edges of thistle-like flavour. It’s a beauty."

Top 100 White & Sparkling Wines 2016

Such an intense and vibrant blended white. You hear a lot about Cape Mentelle’s reds but they make mighty good whites and this cracking good wine is the perfect example. Precise. Fresh and punchy through to the long finish.

Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2016

This has lots of exotic fruit with dried mango, grapefruit and pomelo character. Full body, vinous and flavorful. Fruit forward. Lively. Drink now.

Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2016

The West Australian Wine Guide 2017

This sauvignon blanc-dominant blend packs is plenty with a deep and robust palate really punching out loads of character and flavour intensity. Tropical fruit is fully ripe with just a hint of grassiness edginess on the finish. Crisp acid sustains the finish.

Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2016

Grassy, fresh herb, lemongrass aromas, simple and clean, fresh and well-made. It's quite light, refreshing and intense, with springwater delicacy as well as intensity that lasts long. The acidity is refreshing. A straightforward but very good straight-style sauvignon blend. Drink 2017-2022

Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2015

Very light colour; young and fresh on the nose, with straw and snowpea hints. It's deliciously juicy, quite intense and very young on the palate. Good palate intensity and length as well as fragrance: an exemplary SBS blend.

Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2014

James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2015

A 58/42% blend, machine harvested at night; most cold-‐fermented in stainless steel, with 7% of the blend fermented in new and used French barriques. There is an array of citrus and tropical fruit aromas and flavours, but it is the electricity of the intense palate that is the defining feature of the wine.

Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2013

Ray Jordan, The West Australian Wine Guide 2014

So pure and so intense. This should be the benchmark for this style from Margaret River. It all comes to life with that crunchy acid to lift the vibrant tropical fruits. A little splash of citrus juice and the rest is pure drinking heaven. Tuck in and enjoy.

Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2012

Tyson Stelzer, Wine Taste 2012

Definitive Margaret River SBS of laser-like precision, sensational restraint and beautifully defined acidity. An elegant and fragrant bouquet of lemon blossom glides into a taut, honed palate that zones in on lime zest, crunchy granny smith apples and electric acidity. One-tenth fermented in barrels does nothing to interrupt its purity, but builds drive and longevity. Line and length carry with unwavering determination. Its street price makes this one of the best value sauvignons on the shelves right now.

Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2011

James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2013

Bright quartz-green; this is the unwooded version of Cape Mentelle’s sauvignon blanc semillon, but show the fruit intensity and complexity that allows the (oaked) Wallcliffe version to succeed so well. Here there is a panoply of aromas and flavours spanning citrus/grapefruit, stone fruit and tropical fruits (whatever you care to mention) sustained by lovely natural acidity.

Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2010

Tyson Stelzer, Wine Taste 2011

Maragret River SBS has come of age... A touch of barrel work (just a small percentage here) adds texture and seamlessness to tightly restrained grapefruit, lemon and guava flavours. Jaw-dropping.

Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2009

Huon Hooke, Australian Gourmet Traveller Wine 2010

Deftly managed barrel-ferment character is a feature of this fine blend. It remains fragrant and varietal, with citrus, melon and tropical aromas. Very good weight and softness with a little richness and excellent balance.

Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2008

Jeremy Oliver, The Australian Wine Annual 2010

A fresh, lively expression of this regional style with texture and balance. Its fragrant aromas of gooseberries, passionfruit and tropical fruits overlie nuances of cut grass. Underpinned by a fine chalkiness, its pure, juicy palate has length, richness and a streamlined shape culminating in a fresh, focused and faintly mineral finish

Star Cellar Door

Gourmet Traveller

May 2015

This is a quintessential Margaret River cellar door with rugged jarrah and marri gums standing tall over the statuesque mudbrick cellar door. It's a tranquil bushland setting, ideal for putting the focus on tasting the Cape Mentelle wines. Now under the direction of Frédérique Perrin, it is home to several of Margaret River's finest wines: the sublime Cabernet; the Wallcliffe Sauvignon Blanc Semillon with its stunning razor-sharp complexity; the restrained, age-worthy Chardonnay: the succulent Wilyabrup Cabernet. One of the greatest things about the Cape Mentelle cellar door is that it is all about the wines. Taste and enjoy. There is more, however, if you'd like to take a Behind the Scenes tour (60 minutes for $25pp) or a Degustation Tour and Tasting (120 minutes for $80pp). For those who love pétanque, four pistes are available while the cellar door is open. In the summer, outdoor movies play in the evening in this bucolic setting.

Cape Mentelle is firing on all cylinders, with the winemaking team fully capitalising on the extensive and largely mature vineyards, which obviate the need for contract-grown fruit. It is hard to say which of the wines is best: the ranking, such as it is, varies from year to year. That said, Sauvignon Blanc Semillon, Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon lead the portofolio.

"The quality, depth and breadth of the Cape Mentelle range is astounding. The sensational Cape Mentelle Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 was just pipped in a taste-off for the wine of the year."

Come with a decent pedigree that goes back to his grandfather Jack Mann and his uncle Dorham. But Robert Mann has created this own reputation based on a understanding of provenance, winemaking and region to capture the very essence of  style.
