Shiraz 2013

Halliday Wine Companion

A core of black-cherried fruit champs through an array of clove and assorted dry spice notes. This is a savoury rocket. Peppery, leafy, fruity and firm. Its ripeness is at the upper level of comfort, but power and impact comes as a result.

Shiraz 2014

Campbell Mattinson - The Wine Front

"It’s an excellent shiraz. It grows in the glass beautifully. It hasn’t been pushed too hard, it’s not in your face, it almost sneaks up on you, and yet the flavour is all there. It tastes of plums and peppercorns, woodsmoke and black cherries. It’s satiny throughout and yet the curl of tannin is there; it builds in the background. Textbook in all ways."

Fragrant lifted red berry and violet aromas, with an attractive kiss of oak. A stylish wine. Elegance and balance, as well as charm and drinkability. Good firm, drying tannin structure. A smart shiraz of elegance, depth and drinkability.

The West Australian Wine Guide 2017

When the wines of Cape Mentelle are stacked up it is often easy to ignore how good the shiraz has been over the years. This is another. Plump fruit balanced with a degree of chalky angular tannins. There is a beautiful softness about the palate, with a gravelly and lightly loam character for complexity. Excellent weight in the mouth. Dry and slightly firmish finish.

Shiraz 2014

Huon Hooke - The Real Review

"Very deep red/purple, youthful colour. The bouquet is smoky, oaky and charcuterie-like, with underlying ripe berries. On the palate, it's intense and firm, lively and lean-ish, with a touch of astringency, and a substantial after-grip. It already drinks well."

Shiraz 2015

Aromas of blackberry, granite, truffles and mushroom follow through to full body wine with loads of energy. The minerality is so exciting in this. Unique. Screw cap. Drink here.

The West Australian Wine Guide 2016

Another gorgeous example of Cape Mentelle shiraz. This one is one of the lightest I can recall yet it lacks nothing in fruit flavour, intensity and style. Beautifully seductive plum and spice on the nose with a dash of black pepper. Gravelly textured palate with silky smooth oak integration.

Shiraz 2012

Ray Jordan, Weekend West May 2014

Positively stunning shiraz from this great Margaret River producer. Deep and powerful, yet with remarkable elegance and style. Spices and blackberry on the nose with a little blueberry and chocolate nuance. The palate has a sinewy thread holding the oak and tannin around the intense driving fruit flavours. An engaging savoury finish. All class.

Shiraz 2011

Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front

Destemmed, fermented on skins for a couple of weeks, basket pressed and then matured in large oak vats. The pathway to, as it turned out, a superb shiraz release from Cape Mentelle. This is a beauty. Roasted meats, black pepper, some smoky reduction, a plushness and yet, overwhelmingly, a spicy discipline throughout. Completely unafraid of tannin, all peppery and nutty and firm. Black, polished, gorgeous cherries. Black, red and purple notes. Immaculately clean, bossed into shape by all that dry tannin, and yet exciting to drink, smell, revisit.

Shiraz 2010

Ray Jordan, West Australian

One of the most elegant and stylish shiraz from Margaret River. Savoury, brambly notes on the nose with a splash of spices and black pepper. The palate is supported by fine tannins and fine-grained oak. It results in a smooth and silky finish with wonderful texture and mouth feel. Exceptional wine.

Shiraz 2009

James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2012

Bright crimson-purple; fragrant red and black cherry fruit on the bouquet also runs fluently through the long, elegant, medium-bodied palate; as the wine moves to the finish, the spicy/savoury components become more obvious, yet still harmonious.

Shiraz 2008

Jeremy Oliver, Wine Annual 2011

Stylish, meaty and savoury, this measured, polished shiraz has a deep, rather closed bouquet of dark plums and berries, tight-knit gamy cedar/vanilla oak and dried herbs backed by white pepper, cloves and nutmeg. Elegant but profoundly flavoured, it’s long, supple and fine-grained, delivering a seamless marriage of deep plum, blackberry and blueberry flavour, fine-grained oak and a firm, but pliant undercarriage of fine tannin.

Star Cellar Door

Gourmet Traveller

May 2015

This is a quintessential Margaret River cellar door with rugged jarrah and marri gums standing tall over the statuesque mudbrick cellar door. It's a tranquil bushland setting, ideal for putting the focus on tasting the Cape Mentelle wines. Now under the direction of Frédérique Perrin, it is home to several of Margaret River's finest wines: the sublime Cabernet; the Wallcliffe Sauvignon Blanc Semillon with its stunning razor-sharp complexity; the restrained, age-worthy Chardonnay: the succulent Wilyabrup Cabernet. One of the greatest things about the Cape Mentelle cellar door is that it is all about the wines. Taste and enjoy. There is more, however, if you'd like to take a Behind the Scenes tour (60 minutes for $25pp) or a Degustation Tour and Tasting (120 minutes for $80pp). For those who love pétanque, four pistes are available while the cellar door is open. In the summer, outdoor movies play in the evening in this bucolic setting.

James Halliday

Cape Mentelle is firing on all cylinders, with the winemaking team fully capitalising on the extensive and largely mature vineyards, which obviate the need for contract-grown fruit. It is hard to say which of the wines is best: the ranking, such as it is, varies from year to year. That said, Sauvignon Blanc Semillon, Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon lead the portofolio.

Producer of the Year

"The quality, depth and breadth of the Cape Mentelle range is astounding. The sensational Cape Mentelle Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 was just pipped in a taste-off for the wine of the year."

Winemaker of the Year

Ray Jordan

Come with a decent pedigree that goes back to his grandfather Jack Mann and his uncle Dorham. But Robert Mann has created this own reputation based on a understanding of provenance, winemaking and region to capture the very essence of  style.
