Wilyabrup 2012

95

The West Australian Wine Guide 2016

This is a blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc from a single vineyard in the northern Wilyabrup region. There is a deep complexity in here with medium to full palate providing the perfect platform to express the beautiful texture and fruit flavours. It’s so smooth and silky yet there is power and richness. Lovely the distinctive meaty blackcurrant characters that seem to come from this vineyard.

James Halliday 2016 Australian Wine Companion

A 45/33/24% blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc, destemmed and berry-sorted, then fermented for up to 30 days; matured in French barriques (40% new) for 16 months. A high-toned, savoury wine with plum, tobacco and cedar in play, the tannins fine, the balance is impeccable.

Jeremy Oliver, The Australian Wine Annual 2015

An elegant, dusty and faintly sappy blend of charming length and harmony. An intense fragrance of violets, red flowers, forest berries, fresh cedar/vanilla oak overlies nuances of graphite and dried herbs. It's medium to full-bodied, smooth and seamless, with a pristine expression of dark berries, plums and cherries knit with polished cedary oak and underpinned by pliant, fine-grained tannins, building intensity and structure towards its long, savoury and faintly mineral finish.

Excellent colour, a blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc, which has been matured in French oak, much of it new; its mix of cassis, redcurrant, spice and licorice is bolstered by that oak and by ripe supple tannins. A thoroughly hedonistic wine that will be even better in five-plus years time when that oak has settled down.

Ray Jordan, West Australian Wine Guide 2013

This is a single vineyard wine made from three varieties - cabernet saucignon, merlot and cabernet franc. It’s an outstanding wine that displays regionality and vineyard terroir. So beautifully woven togetehr with a seamless smooth palate controlled by silky fine tannins and fine grained oak. It extends effortlessly to a very long finish. A beauty.

Wilyabrup 2009

James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2013

A blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc from vines planted in 1970, some of the first in the Wilyabrup area; the bright and crystal clear crimson colour introduces a beautifully modulated wine, with layers of red and black fruits, superfine tannins and cedary French oak.

Nick Stock, Good Wine Guide

A red equivalent in the range to the ‘Wallcliffe’, this carries a sub-regional classification rather than a single vineyard. The blend is cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc, and it has plenty of classic cedary comforting characters; sweet berries, plums and bright vanillin spice. The palate’s superbly crafted with ripe, fine tannins that delivery superb, juicy fruit flavour and immense length with striking poise and elegance. Masterful - a welcome new addition to the Margaret River claret movement.

Star Cellar Door

Gourmet Traveller

May 2015

This is a quintessential Margaret River cellar door with rugged jarrah and marri gums standing tall over the statuesque mudbrick cellar door. It's a tranquil bushland setting, ideal for putting the focus on tasting the Cape Mentelle wines. Now under the direction of Frédérique Perrin, it is home to several of Margaret River's finest wines: the sublime Cabernet; the Wallcliffe Sauvignon Blanc Semillon with its stunning razor-sharp complexity; the restrained, age-worthy Chardonnay: the succulent Wilyabrup Cabernet. One of the greatest things about the Cape Mentelle cellar door is that it is all about the wines. Taste and enjoy. There is more, however, if you'd like to take a Behind the Scenes tour (60 minutes for $25pp) or a Degustation Tour and Tasting (120 minutes for $80pp). For those who love pétanque, four pistes are available while the cellar door is open. In the summer, outdoor movies play in the evening in this bucolic setting.

Australian Wine Companion 2014

James Halliday

Cape Mentelle is firing on all cylinders, with the winemaking team fully capitalising on the extensive and largely mature vineyards, which obviate the need for contract-grown fruit. It is hard to say which of the wines is best: the ranking, such as it is, varies from year to year. That said, Sauvignon Blanc Semillon, Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon lead the portofolio.

"The quality, depth and breadth of the Cape Mentelle range is astounding. The sensational Cape Mentelle Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 was just pipped in a taste-off for the wine of the year."

The West Australian Wine Guide 2012

Winemaker of the Year

Ray Jordan

Come with a decent pedigree that goes back to his grandfather Jack Mann and his uncle Dorham. But Robert Mann has created this own reputation based on a understanding of provenance, winemaking and region to capture the very essence of  style.
