ZINFANDEL 2013

96

The West Australian Wine Guide 2016

In many ways this is the zin against which all others are judged. And without doubt this is one of the best I can recall. Lovely mix of plums and fruitcake with a deepblackberry brambly influence. Loads of spices and dark chocolate. Yet the balance and effortless length of the palate provide such a refined mouthfeel. I have to say I’m not generally a zin fan, but this one might just change all that.

Deep, bright red/purple hue; black fruit and licorice aromas, with a hint of cough medicine. The palate is very full-bodied and dense, rich and super-ripe, with fruit sweetness in the mid-palate followed by massive tannins. A good, well-made wine which has a lot of cellar potential.

Zinfandel 2012

Tyson Stelzer, Wine Business Monthly - Wines of the Year 2014

An impressively focused Zinfandel capturing all the black fruit, tar and understated Christmas cake exoticism of this variety, yet more consummate control and focus than ever.

Zinfandel 2011

Jeremy Oliver, The Australian Wine Annual 2014

Plush, smooth and unctuous, unfolding a profoundly floral, musky and heady bouquet of rose petals, blackberries, blueberry confiture with a wildness and genuine depth of perfume. Smooth and silky, it reveals a lustrous, layered and faintly brambly presence of cherries, plums and dark berries tightly knit with an ultra-fine grade of polished tannin and finishing with exceptional freshness. Simply beautiful clarity, structure and depth of flavour.

Jeremy Oliver, The Australian Wine Annual 2013

An outstanding wine that reflects its varietal point of difference as awell as its regionality. Heady, spicy aromas of blackberries, blueberries, sweet vanilla/cedary oak and drief herbs ar lifted by a scent of rose petals and briar. It’s juicy, long and smooth, with a pristine, perfeclty clear presence of brightly lit fruit underpinned by a fine, tight spine of crunchy tannins, finishing with a lenght, balance and a vivacious cut of acidity. About as non-Californian a zin as you could try, but don’t miss out on this wine!

Zinfandel 2009

James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2013

Even richer and fuller in the mouth than the ‘10 but bringing the same raft of flavours into play. Its colour retention is excellent, as is the tapestry of tannins on the finish, making it an even better wine.

Zinfandel 2008

Jeremy Oliver, The Australian Wine Annual 2012

A brilliant modern zin - an artful reflection of the more perfumed and fine-grained Margaret River reds from 2008. It’s scented with spicy, floral and meaty aromas of cranberries, blackberries, redcurrants and raspberries, with undertones of bitumen, cloves and cinnamon. Long and supple, with tight-fisted layers of pristine red and blue fruits, it builds in strength and density towards its lingering and finely astringent finish.

Zinfandel 2007

Lisa Perotti-Brown, The Wine Advocate

...Cape Mentelle’s Zinfandel has got to be about the best example of this grape in the country. Deep garnet colored, the 2007 Zinfandel has incredibly expressive blueberry and spiced raisin aromas with an undercurrent of plum pudding, cinnamon and allspice. Rich, full bodied with medium to high acid and a medium level of velvety tannins, this is one opulent wine giving a beautifully long finish.

Star Cellar Door

Gourmet Traveller

May 2015

This is a quintessential Margaret River cellar door with rugged jarrah and marri gums standing tall over the statuesque mudbrick cellar door. It's a tranquil bushland setting, ideal for putting the focus on tasting the Cape Mentelle wines. Now under the direction of Frédérique Perrin, it is home to several of Margaret River's finest wines: the sublime Cabernet; the Wallcliffe Sauvignon Blanc Semillon with its stunning razor-sharp complexity; the restrained, age-worthy Chardonnay: the succulent Wilyabrup Cabernet. One of the greatest things about the Cape Mentelle cellar door is that it is all about the wines. Taste and enjoy. There is more, however, if you'd like to take a Behind the Scenes tour (60 minutes for $25pp) or a Degustation Tour and Tasting (120 minutes for $80pp). For those who love pétanque, four pistes are available while the cellar door is open. In the summer, outdoor movies play in the evening in this bucolic setting.

Australian Wine Companion 2014

James Halliday

Cape Mentelle is firing on all cylinders, with the winemaking team fully capitalising on the extensive and largely mature vineyards, which obviate the need for contract-grown fruit. It is hard to say which of the wines is best: the ranking, such as it is, varies from year to year. That said, Sauvignon Blanc Semillon, Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon lead the portofolio.

"The quality, depth and breadth of the Cape Mentelle range is astounding. The sensational Cape Mentelle Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 was just pipped in a taste-off for the wine of the year."

Winemaker of the Year

Come with a decent pedigree that goes back to his grandfather Jack Mann and his uncle Dorham. But Robert Mann has created this own reputation based on a understanding of provenance, winemaking and region to capture the very essence of  style.
