Chardonnay

An elegant and complex chardonnay with flavours of grapefruit, lime and gingerbread on a long fine palate with subtle mineral hints. Traditional winemaking techniques including hand picking and barrel fermentation produce a wine of great pedigree with outstanding balance and refinement.

The Vineyard
The fruit for Cape Mentelle Chardonnay is sourced principally from the wineries Chapman Brook vineyard located in the cooler southern half of the Margaret River wine region. Most of the chardonnay is cane-pruned and vertical shoot positioned. The majority of these vineyards are planted to the Mendoza (Gin Gin) clone of chardonnay, which has proven to be particularly successful in the Margaret River region.
The Season
A wet winter and warm spring encouraged uniform growth in all varieties. An ideal flowering period marked the beginning of a long dry spell lasting until mid-February when the whites were all harvested in perfect conditions over the following four weeks. A great vintage for Margaret River!
Winemaking
Hand-picked bunches were elevated into our Bucher membrane press and the resulting free-run juice was left to settle overnight. The following day the juice was racked into Burgundian coopered French oak barriques, of which approximately one third were new. Fermentation proceeded by both natural and selected yeast strains. The wine matured in barrel for nine months, during which battonage and topping was carried out weekly. Batches were individually assessed and those meeting the requisite standard were blended in December. The wine was bottled in January 2009.
Analysis
13% alcohol, 6.55g/l total acidity, 3.22 pH.

Fresh nutty, mealy fruit aromas with a hint of funk. youthful yet complex flavours fill a soft, gentle, light- to medium-bodied palate with just enough richness and a long carry.

Cape Mentelle’s Margaret River chardonnays have been evolving from a fuller style into something leaner. The ‘08 is typically understated and firm, with grapefruit and nectarine aromas lightly dressed in oak. There’s a light, creamy thread too but austerity is the thing. The palate is intense and dry with tight acidity.

The 2008 Chardonnay reveals itself as a real knock-out and a relative bargain to boot. Releasing a fragrant, flower and talc-laced perfume with a core of citrus, ripe apple and peach, the nose also has pleasant nuances of toast and cream. The palate is very intense and nervy, giving a sense of restrained concentration with lovely crisp acid cutting through. It finishes very long and very minerally.

I rate this one of the top chardonnays to come my way in the past year. From the Margaret River- based Cape Mentelle... it has superb balance and structure. It shines brassy gold in the glass and has aromas of orange blossom, crushed almonds and sandalwood. Elegant yellow nectarine flavour glides onto the front of the palate and ruby grapefruit, fig, marzipan and mineral fruit elements marry with cashew-like oak on the middle palate. Flinty acid refreshes at the finish.

Elegant, artful and harmonious, this very contemporary chardonnay has a nutty, mealy bouquet of melon, grapefruit, nectarine and white peaches... It’s deep and luxuriant yet fine and supple.

... the 2008 Cape Mentelle Chardonnay and add some funkier, more complex matchstick notes. It’s rich but not excessively so, cut with limy acidity and delicious to drink. If you’re a fan of this label, this is an outstanding release.
