about Cape Mentelle's wine”

Jeremy Oliver, The Australian Wine Annual 2015

An elegant and complex chardonnay with flavours of grapefruit, lime and gingerbread on a long fine palate with subtle mineral hints. Traditional winemaking techniques including hand picking and barrel fermentation produce a wine of great pedigree with outstanding balance and refinement.

Margaret River has established an international reputation for high quality chardonnay. The Cape Mentelle style draws inspiration from traditional methods to produce a wine displaying aromatic complexity and a fine, textured palate with a long, clean finish.

Straw gold.
Quince, apple and pear compote, cinnamon toast and roasted fig dominate the open, very expressive nose.
The palate is full and rich with flavors reminiscent of bread crust, sticky fig pudding, candied nectarine and granny smith crisps. Notes of almond, pecan and creamy, savoury oak frame the lond finish.
100% Chardonnay
5 to 10 years
Food Pairing Notes
Roasted fowl with morel mushrooms and cream sauce; lobster with drawn butter; goose terrine.
The Vineyard
Fruit is predominantly sourced from Cape Mentelle’s Chapman Brook Vineyard located in the cooler Southern half of Margaret River. The Chardonnay is both spur and cane-pruned and vertical shoot positioned producing an upright open canopy. The majority of these vineyards are planted to the Mendoza (GinGin) clone of Chardonnay along with classic Burgundian selections (clones 95 and 76).
The Season
Margaret River experienced amongst the warmest vintage on record and on a par with the very warm 2011 vintage. White varieties were all harvested in a rush and look fantastic with the fruit all in the winery by the end of February. Flavours are bright and fresh with natural acidity high and in good balance with the fruit intensity. Another great vintage for Margaret River.
Hand-picked bunches were elevated into our membrane press and the resulting free-run juice was left to settle overnight. The following day the juice was racked into Burgundian coopered French oak barriques, of which approximately one third were new. Fermentation proceeded by both natural and selected yeast strains. The wine matured in barrel for nine months, during which battonage and topping was carried out weekly. Batches were individually assessed and those meeting the requisite standard were blended in October and bottled in November 2014, after stabilisation in tank.
13.0 % alcohol, 6.9 g/l total acidity, 3.2 pH.

Some wines are songs to their variety and vineyard(s) and this is one such. It's touched by toasty, spicy oak but the wellspring is clearly the fruit, pure and shining as it is. Gingerbread, white peach, pear and grapefruit. A match has been struck nearby, the glow and the smoke subtly apparent. Beauty in a bottle.

Huon Hooke

Bright, light yellow/green colour; lemon, citrusy fruit to the fore on an intense bouquet. Toasted cashew overtones. The wine is tremendously concentrated and powerful with great line and a penetrating palate following on with a very long-lasting finish. Grapefruit and lemon flavours linger on and on. A superb chardonnay, with a big future.

The Wine Front

Gary Walsh

“This is very good release for Cape Mentelle. You rarely go too far wrong with their Chardonnay, but this vintage is a long way right. Ripe grapefruit and lime, white peach, a whiff of struck match, ginger and cinnamon toast oak. It’s light and deft, but flavoursome, bursting with juicy citrus fruit and softened with cashew. The flinty smoky texture is bang on and the acidity is crystal clear, keeps it tight, and draws it long. Best of all, it’s just bloody beautiful to drink.”

Another mighty good chardonnay showing the continued evolution of the style. Beautifully complex aromas of grapefruit and subtle mealy grapefruit with a trace of lightly roasted cashew. A slight hint of spicy lime characters add another layer of interest. The palate is controlled and refined with great length. Finishes with a lick of minerally acidity.

“Stone fruit, citrus and spice/gingerbread aromas make a seductive intro, and the palate is long, mellow and concentrated, soft and super-long.”
