Introduced to the Cape Mentelle vineyard from California in 1974, zinfandel is a particularly demanding variety to manage both in the vineyard and the winery. The resulting unique and hedonistically rich wine makes all the hard work worthwhile and as such the Cape Mentelle Zinfandel has developed something of a ‘cult’ following for lovers of bold red wines.
A brilliant modern zin - an artful reflection of the more perfumed and fine-grained Margaret River reds from 2008. It’s scented with spicy, floral and meaty aromas of cranberries, blackberries, redcurrants and raspberries, with undertones of bitumen, cloves and cinnamon. Long and supple, with tight-fisted layers of pristine red and blue fruits, it builds in strength and density towards its lingering and finely astringent finish.
You can immidiately tell this Margaret River wine is quality from the very first nose. Better yet, it only improves until the last drop. Rich, bold and smooth tastes deliver a full mouthfeel.
The Big Ant voted this the "best of night" and in heady company, both of which point to this as very much a pointy (master) end wine.
